Elder mediation involves an older person who fully participates either independently or with a representative to the fullest extent possible in issues that affect them and their future. This process will maintain his/her dignity and affords them optimal dignity and autonomy by giving him/her a voice in decisions that affect his/her quality of life.

A trained and neutral third party (elder mediator) is present to assist in creating space for all members of the family to be heard and can involve a wide variety of conflict situations. Following on from the above, an elder mediator can strengthen family bonds and empower all members to develop in accordance with the changing nature of their relationships and the realities of their situation to avoid any misunderstandings.

Elder mediation enables a discussion on the interpersonal relationships between families such as sibling rivalries. Most importantly, mediation offers a calm, comfortable environment where all are at their ease as facilitated by the mediator. Meetings often occur separately with the mediator. After that, a potential joint meeting may occur if the parties feel comfortable.

Above all, this type of  (elder) mediator must be extremely sensitive to the situation as it can involve a vulnerable senior. However, as with all other forms of mediation each party is allowed as much time as they need to convey their ideas. Therefore a more thoughtful decision making process tends to develop which leads onto potential solutions. Finally, a legally binding agreement can be drawn up by the mediator.
